If you want to feel like royalty, then the Vidago Palace is the place to go. Its spa was originally decreed by King D. Carlos I in the 19th century to capitalise on the village’s thermal waters, which were considered to be health-bringing. The five-star hotel is now one of the most prestigious resorts in Europe, offering guests unparalleled service and a golf course designed by Philip Mackenzie Ross.
Accommodation is sophisticated and elegant, encompassing 37 Classic, nine Superior, eight Garden and three Privilege rooms. These are complemented by one Standard, eight Junior and three Grand suites to make every stay memorable for its unique charm and comfort.
Gastronomic delight is on the menu at a variety of dining venues, including the impressive Grand Ballroom, intimate Wine Cellar, light-filled Winter Garden and convivial Four Seasons Salon and Bar.
And to bring the traditional healing benefits of the region’s waters to modern wellness travellers, the Vidago Palace Hotel’s Thermal Spa promises an unforgettable and immersive range of hydro experiences, aesthetic medicine and rejuvenating treatments and rituals.
The Spa
The Thermal Spa
The Thermal Spa at Vidago Palace Hotel is a minimalist-inspired creation of white marble designed by international architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. The spa’s USP is its harnessing of the power of naturally therapeutic mineral water through a range of specialised treatments.
These include stimulating jet showers, immersion and hydromassage baths, Vichy showers and hydromassage jets that are part of an outdoor vitality pool. A seven-day hydroponic treatment even offers the diuretic and alkalising effects of the water through ingestion.
The water is drawn from deep wells in granite rock and said to provide digestive and musculoskeletal benefits as well as sedative effects on the metabolism, cardiovascular system and skin.
The spa also offers a menu of aesthetic medicine and anti-ageing treatments, performed by specialist medical professionals. Using Clarins products in conjunction with the healing waters, the offering promises ‘a world of emotion and discovery’ and an awakening of the senses.
Beginning with medical and nutrition consultations, biometric evaluation and physical and cardio respiratory testing, the spa’s various bespoke medical programmes incorporate Iyashi Dome products and a range of modalities including massage, body treatments, meditation, compresses, shiatsu, Pilates and access to the Vidago spa circuit. This offers a vitality pool, indoor pool, sauna, hammam, two experience showers, an ice fountain and a fully equipped gym.

To Stay
A choice of rooms and suites promise unique comfort and sophistication for guests to sink into.
Classic rooms are welcoming and luminous with views of the park and mountains beyond; Superior rooms are available with twin or king-size beds and exquisite bath tubs for an indulgent soak; Privilege rooms deliver elegance and comfort with several windows letting the light and scenery flood in.
Garden rooms are located on the ground floor and have the benefit of a luxurious private terrace with sun loungers, while Deluxe Garden rooms are modern and spacious, and can be connected making them ideal for families or groups.
Suites at Vidago Palace have been majestically restored with period accessories that give the feel of a real royal residence. Junior Suites offer sophisticated refinement from their comfortable beds to freestanding baths and spacious living areas. One suite, named ‘101’, offers a unique view of the palace’s fountain from its three different areas, as well as walls covered with Gournay silk paper with full-scale floral motifs.
The uniquely glamourous Grand Suite is decorated in a style characteristic of the 18th century, with small details that recall Portugal’s colonial heritage. Here you can indulge in the separate shower and bath before taking advantage of the dressing room or traversing the small corridor that leads to a living room and office.

To Eat
Under the guidance of chef Vitor Matos, the restaurants at Vidago Palace use seasonal and regional products to create Mediterranean-inspired dishes that blend traditional and contemporary gastronomic trends.
The Grand Ballroom, with its golden wallpaper and inner balcony, is a majestic setting for Salao Nobre, where traditional dishes from northern Portugal are deconstructed and reinterpreted to offer a sophisticated sample of the region’s best cuisine.
For a more bistrot-like feel, visit the Wine Cellar, where tastings can be partnered with Iberian snacks and tapas in the relaxed ambience of a vintage café.
To start your day in style, the Winter Garden’s large skylight allows light to flood in, illuminating the black-and-white chequered marble floor as you feast on a magnificent buffet of pastries, delicious fresh fruit and hot and cold specialities.
At the opposite end of the day, retreat to the Four Seasons Salon and Bar, designed in the style of an 18th-century literary salon, for conversation and reflection over afternoon tea or a selection of more intoxicating beverages.
In between times, there is no shortage of refreshment to be found at the Pool Bar, dotted with loungers and basking under the Portuguese sunshine, or the Club House Bar and Restaurant, where in winter the crackle of an open fire provides a cosy soundtrack to your enjoyment.
