Located on the unspoilt island of Folegandros, Santorini’s lesser-known neighbour on the southeast coast of the Cyclades in Greece, Gundari is a brand new, all-suite, eco-retreat. Set in a nature reserve amongst 80 acres of wilderness, the boutique resort sits atop rugged cliffs looking out over the Aegean Sea.

A world away from traditional Greek island hotels, the design has a eco-contemporary feel – think a palette of earth and water tones, with putty-coloured walls, local wood and stone galore. There’s a cliffside pool with swim-up cocktail bar, a wine bar and an organic farm serving the farm-to-plate restaurant. The Gundari spa employs ancient Greek rituals in therapeutic treatments that use local wild herbs.

Sustainably is in Gundari’s DNA. The developers have planted more than 600 seedlings to encourage indigenous plants and rooms have been built around the cliff’s natural contours. Everything is energy efficient; water waste is reused and the hotel offers a fleet of electric cars for guests to rent.

The closest international airport is Santorini. From there, it’s a 50-minute boat ride to Folegandros port.

The Spa

A bioclimatic subterranean spa merged within a dramatic cliff, the Gundari Spa is all about healing and connecting with nature and your inner self.

Facilities include sleek treatment rooms with calming views of the Aegean Sea, a sodium-packed mineral pool and tranquil relaxation areas.

The spa’s wellness menu includes holistic offerings such as sound baths, energy healing, yoga and meditation workshops. In addition to the expert in-house wellness practitioners a curated selection of visiting wellness practitioners offer therapies in their specialists fields throughout the year.

Healing spa treatments include traditional Greek massages that combine balms, tonics and infused oils made from Folegandros’ native herbs with the natural curative properties of touch and the fresh sea breeze.

Fitness fans can make use of the gym with interactive equipment, join one of the guided island hikes or partake in sailing and scuba diving trips. The resort also offers electric bikes for guests to explore the island.
