Sitting in Ireland’s Golden Vale, an hour’s drive from Cork airport, Cashel Palace is a restored Palladian manor, built in the shadow of the Rock of Cashel – Ireland’s most iconic medieval site – in County Tipperary.

Owned by the Magnier family – who also part-own the infamous Sandy Lane in Barbados – the hotel is a member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux group. The Rock of Cashel was the high seat of Christianity in Ireland for six centuries and the property was turned it into a luxury hotel in 1962. In its time, it has played host to more than its fair share of famous faces, including the likes of Princess Diana, Elizabeth Taylor and Jackie Kennedy.

The Magniers developed the world’s most successful thoroughbred breeding stud farm, Coolmore, located in Fethard, twenty minutes drive from the hotel, so there are also equine pursuits aplenty. There’s even an equine concierge who can arrange Tipperary mountain trekking. If you prefer, the hotel offers hikes through the Glen of Aherlow, fishing along the Suir and Aherlow waterways or whiskey and gin tasting at the Tipperary Boutique Distillery.

Sustainability has played a big part in Cashel Palace’s restoration. An antique well, discovered during the refurbishment, provides some of the water supply and all of the new builds are powered using renewable sources.

With three acres of English-style sweeping gardens, lounges with roaring fireplaces, a majestic colonnaded hall, and the new addition of a peaceful and light-filled spa, Cashel Palace is a meticulously restored luxury hideaway.

The Spa

The Spa at Cashel Palace Hotel

The multi-million Euro Cashel Palace spa is the vision of Mrs Magnier, in conjunction with London-based designer Emma Pearson and spa consultant Greg Payne. The purpose-built facilities overlook historic mulberry trees and the iconic Rock of Cashel.

An oasis of tranquility, facilities include a light-flooded 17m swim-out pool, as well as two outdoor seaweed baths. There are three hot and cold experience showers, a hot tub, a starry sky-ceiling steam room and a bespoke Himalayan salt wall sauna. Facilities extend to a fully equipped gym, a Mary Quinlan Hair salon and yoga studio, as well as a relaxation room and an outside spa terrace overlooking the gardens.

Outdoor bathing rituals on offer include a 40-minute Seaweed Bath using hand harvested Atlantic Seaweed and an Irish peat mud bath, infused with aromatic spices of ginger and orange. Inside the spa, treatments by Bamford, Valmont and VOYA include the 90-minute Bamford Ritual, which combines carefully targeted ancient techniques to nurture wellbeing and the Luminosity Ritual using Valmont’s iconic regenerating collagen mask.

The Spa at Cashel Palace is devoted to nurturing mind, body and spirit through targeted holistic methods. Taking place in The Bolton Library, classes include Kore Pilates and yoga.

To Eat

Stephen Hayes heads up The Bishop’s Buttery, the gourmet Michelin star restaurant at Cashel Palace. The modern Irish menu is infused with French culinary touches and follows the rhythm of the seasons.

For a more informal dining experience Mikey Ryan’s Bar and Kitchen offers a bistro-style menu in the adjacent grounds. Recently extended to include The Secret Garden and The Glass Well, both venues offer private dining.

For an aperitif or after dinner drink, you can choose from the intimate Residents’ Cocktail Bar or the cosy Guinness Bar. The Palladian house’s original red brick wine cellar can also be booked for private wine tastings led by head sommelier, Farrah Scanlan.
