Sopwell House

Hertfordshire, England

Set within 12 acres of Hertfordshire countryside on the outskirts of St Albans, Sopwell House is a grand Georgian country-house hotel that blends elegance, history and comfort with stately architecture and contemporary design flair.

The 126-room property (including 16 beautiful individually designed Mews Suites) dates back to 1603, and has been run by the Bejerano family for almost four decades. The ambiance strikes the perfect balance between homely and luxurious, and the service feels openly warm and personal.

Sopwell House is home to two spa experiences: Cottonmill Spa and The Club at Cottonmill – an ultra-luxurious, state-of-the-art wellness space, nestled within beautifully landscaped gardens adorned with cabanas, hot tubs, serene relaxation areas, and glowing fire pits.

The hotel is easily accessible for London and Luton Airport yet feels like a secluded retreat: winding lanes, gardens by award-winning designers, and a sense of relaxing privacy while still being close to the shops, culture and charm of St Albans.

Cottonmill Spa & The Club at Cottonmill

Sopwell House’s spa offering is designed to deliver a balance of holistic and cutting-edge wellness in a calm, light-filled environment. The spa is divided into two distinct adults-only areas: the main Cottonmill Spa, and The Club at Cottonmill – an exclusive inner sanctum reserved for members, guests staying in selected suites, or those booked on a Club package.

Cottonmill Spa area features a swimming pool and vitality pools, a gym, heat experiences, and a terrace area.

The Club at Cottonmill introduces a truly elevated experience, with exceptional wellness spaces such as a Deep Relaxation Room, Whisper Room, Garden Room, landscaped spa gardens, and outdoor elements such as fire pits and hot tubs creating the ultimate in tranquillity. Design is sophisticated and inviting, with natural light, bespoke furniture, atmospheric lighting by Tom Dixon, and garden landscaping by Ann-Marie Powell.

The treatment menu showcases both British and internationally acclaimed spa brands, including Elemis, ESPA, Aromatherapy Associates, and the results-driven med-spa brand iS Clinical. Treatments range from Amber & Quartz Crystal bed experiences (incorporating sound and sand therapies) and Vichy showers, to bespoke facials, hot stone massages, and Hammam-inspired rituals.

Top tip: For the most luxurious experience, upgrade to The Club at Cottonmill.

To Eat

There are two main restaurants at Sopwell House, each with its own character.

The Brasserie is an airy open-plan space that serves modern British classics, from breakfast through to dinner. Dishes include elevated versions of British staples – think Dorset crab, Cornish mussels, slow-cooked beef, sticky toffee pudding, and a fine selection of cheeses and wines.

Omboo offers Asian-inspired sharing plates, drawing on spice routes of Asia and the Far East. The menu is lively, bold in flavour, intended for convivial enjoyment.

For light bites, cocktails and craft drinks you can head to the Octagon Bar and Conservatory Bar.
