Checking in to the Park House Hotel & Spa feels as if you have been invited to stay at a friend’s luxury country house – a testament to the homely feel of this family-owned hotel that has been in the O’Brien family for more than 60 years. Located a short drive from the village of Midhurst in West Sussex, Park House Hotel & Spa is 4 miles from the famous Cowdray Polo Club and only 7 miles from Goodwood. The pictures that adorn the walls in the bar remind you that the hotel is popular with the glitzy polo set and it has also played host to many illustrious guests including Princess Diana.
The modern PH2O spa is housed in a separate building and guests can enjoy use of the beautiful mother-of-pearl indoor pool, a Jacuzzi, as well as male and female steam and sauna rooms. In the female changing rooms there is also a foot spa so ladies can preen their tootsies. The chill out area was stocked with the day’s newspapers and a selection of magazines, as well as complimentary tea. It was the perfect way to while away the afternoon. In the summer guests can also make use of the fabulous outdoor pool and terrace and sip on delicious cocktails. Treatments are by organic luxury brand VOYA and range from body treatments and massages to facials and beauty essentials. There is also a selection of ‘sides’ which are 15 minute express treatments that can be added to your treatment, such as the calm minds scalp massage or the lava shot, which uses warm lava shells to reduce muscle tension in the shoulders.
Mindful Dreams Massage – The relaxing 75 minute treatment begins with a fabulous foot ritual where your feet are exfoliated and gently massaged. This sleep-inducing massage uses VOYA and Caudalie products, alongside delicate gentle massage of the face and body. The massage technique focuses on gentle Balinese style strokes to really relax your mind and body and leave you in a dreamy state.
Seaweed Leaf Wrap – The 90 minute treatment begins with an exfoliation using finely ground seaweed. Fresh leaves of Atlantic seaweed are then used to cocoon the body in order to detoxify and hydrate the skin. Whilst you enjoy a relaxing scalp massage, the leaves (which are packed with vitamins and minerals) work their magic. Designed to leave your skin deeply nourished and silky smooth.
The hotel has only 21 rooms, with 12 in the main house, six in South Down Cottage, two in Polo Cottage and one in Baytree Cottage. Our home for the night was room 21, which was in the South Down Cottage and was quintessentially English in its style. It had a lovely country feel, with crisp white linen bedding and soft floral curtains. A wooden balcony off the room overlooked the beautiful South Downs reminding you that you had well and truly escaped to the country. The bathroom was spacious and luxurious with a large bath and walk in shower, and was stocked with products from organic brand VOYA, as well as comfy robes, slippers, tea and coffee and delicious biscuits.
The intimate dining room and airy conservatory overlooking the hotel’s manicured lawns form the setting for the hotel restaurant. Breakfast includes classics such as Eggs Benedict and traditional English breakfasts to order, as well as a buffet of freshly baked pastries, croissants, fruits and cereals. Executive chef Callum Keir and his team ensure that guests enjoy a fine dining experience with the focus on tasty dishes, created with fresh, local and seasonal ingredients. Mains included roasted lamb with fennel, white turnip and roasted garlic, twice baked cheddar soufflé with purple sprouting broccoli and nutmeg cream. Dessert is a feast for your taste buds with choices such as baked Bailey’s cheesecake with confit orange and coffee ice cream, or glazed treacle tart with Granny Smith apple and clotted cream.
Finish off your evening with a nightcap in the hotel bar or the sumptuous drawing room, it’s so cosy it’s easy to imagine that you are retiring to your very own drawing room after dinner!
