Billed as ‘Art Nouveau Spirit’ this grande dame of a hotel had a major facelift in 2015 and now offers the slickest lodgings in the upscale city of Lausanne.

Surrounded by private parkland, this five-star spot combines old-school glamour with modern design (it’s worth requesting a room in the historic ‘chateau’ building) and features a destination spa so shiny and new that it almost squeaks.

Like Lausanne itself this place is quietly fabulous, managing to be exclusive and super discreet while also offering smiley service whether you’re dressed in a designer suit or your fluffy spa robe.

Le Spa Du Royal

A clever combination of hi-tech beauty wizardry and zen design (walls of moss, dark wood, bright orchids, no overhead lighting) make this exclusive spa the perfect place to recover from either a facelift at a nearby private or a particularly fierce shopping trip around the boutiques of Lausanne.

Size matters in this serene space which spans 1,500sqm and offers a sexy subterranean vibe but features only eight treatment rooms. The rest of the floor is given over to an indoor/outdoor pool, vitality pools, steam room, sauna, steam room, a “Ladies Only” spa, two relaxation rooms – including one filled with heated waterbeds and fleecy blankets – a private spa, a fitness centre and a brilliantly curated boutique.

The Treatment

Ahead of a delicious signature massage this spa editor really enjoyed taking advantage of the Ladies Only area featuring steam room, sauna and disco-lit plunge pools as well as its own relaxation area.

Once inside the warm and spicy air of the treatment room I was treated to a bespoke therapy that included a touch of detoxing lymphatic drainage as well as relaxing aromatherapy work and left me melting into the XXL bed.

Other Treatments

The spa offers a comprehensive range of cosmetic treatments, massages and holistic therapies on site and is also affiliated with internationally awarded Clinic Lémanic, a private clinic dedicated to skin health and beauty that works with specialists in Anti-Ageing, Aesthetic Dermatology, Laser therapies and Plastic Surgery. Programmes are personalised and adapted to each individual’s specific needs.

To Stay

One of the city’s most prestigious addresses since first opening in 1909, The Savoy reopened in 2015 after a five year complete renovation and a 100 million Swiss francs investment.

Now the traditional facade belies a cool, contemporary interior that features an entirely new ‘Garden Wing’ (home to the spa and an extra 95 rooms) as well as fine-dining options, an elegant lounge bar and a cheeky cigar bar

In the main areas standout design pieces keep things interesting (the lobby chandelier is an Instagram favourite) while high ceilings and extra-wide corridors as per the originals created to accommodate the huge skirts and trains of ladies at the time keep things glamorous.

In the rooms expect more quiet fabulousness thanks to calming colours, sumptuous furnishings, Hermes products and parquet flooring.

To Eat

Breakfast on the light-filled terrace is something to be savoured, whether you decide to indulge in the flaky pastries and serious swiss cheese selection or embrace all things wellness with some fresh figs, chia bowls and a lactose-free latte.

At night the restaurant serves up seasonal dishes in a Brasserie setting, while at weekends the Lounge Bar is a wonderful place to taste some cocktails inspired by Head Mixologist Romain Tritsch’s globetrotting.

Facilities and Activities

In the summer guests can drink spritz overlooking the city and the Alps thanks to 360degree views from the rooftop Sky Terrace. In winter the gardens play host to a private ice rink.
