A sanctuary to thousands of tropical birds, home to 2,200 free-roaming Giant Aldabra Tortoises, safeguarding the nests of hundreds of endangered Hawksbill Turtles and with 7 private beaches, one frequently voted “most beautiful in the world”; Fregate Island Private really is in a league of it’s own.

The deserted ivory beaches, crystal clear waters and verdant landscape create a breathtakingly beautiful destination. It’s also incredibly private – there are just 17 residences on the island – all with private pools and steps down to your very own patch of beach. Personal Butlers and the Ayurvedic, Rock Spa complete this idyllic haven.

Stepping off my private helicopter on to Fregate Island Private, it’s immediately clear why this is one of the most exclusive destinations in the world. The deserted ivory beaches (often voted the most beautiful in the world), crystal clear waters, abundant flora and fauna (including ylang ylang, banyan and cashew trees), and the 2200 Aldabra giant tortoises wandering freely, create a breathtakingly beautiful destination.

It’s also incredibly private – there are just 17 residences on the island (which is about the size of Monaco) all with private infinity pools, Jacuzzis and steps down to your very own patch of beach. A personal butler to serve your every whim, and a boutique Ayurvedic spa completes the idyllic haven.

Winner of numerous prestigious awards this is the elite Indian Ocean island where the stars choose to spa. One evening over dinner with the manager I quizzed him about well known guests. “We’re very discreet – it’s part of our service.” My friend Google is more forthcoming: Brad Pitt, Sir Paul McCartney, Pierce Brosnan and Jennifer Aniston have all (allegedly) stepped barefoot, on it’s pristine white sand beaches.

The Rock Spa

The Rock Spa sits at the Island’s summit with panoramic views of the forest and ocean beyond. Overseen by ayurvedic physician Dr Abhilash Haridas, the spa leans heavily toward the holistic and offers a wonderful selection of treatments using products created from the island’s flora.

Facilities include six treatment rooms, a pool, a yoga centre and gym, and a candlelit relaxation area where herbal teas and juices are served. A complimentary yoga class and a head and shoulder massage are offered complimentary to all guests on arrival to the island to encourage immediate relaxation.

The Treatment

All treatments at The Rock Spa begin with a lifestyle analysis and consultation with the spa doctor. My bespoke ‘Ayurvedic Experience’ treatment was booked in for dusk (traditionally, Ayurvedic treatments are taken in the evening to ensure complete relaxation).

The beautiful treatment suite was scented with a sweet musky incense and dimly lit with candles – the ambience made my shoulders instantly drop. Using warm sesame and jasmine oils, my therapist used sweeping movements, first one side of the body then the other, before finally crossing to bring spiritual harmony. I left floating on air. After the treatment mango tea was served and I was given a lifestyle recommendation programme, including diet and exercise regimes compiled by the doctor, to practice on my return home.

To Stay

We stayed in a luxury private residence, Villa 7. A private forest fringed walkway leads to the vast accommodation. The spacious airy lounge, with floor to ceiling windows boasting infinite sea views, is dressed with handcrafted furniture and styled with cool linens and sumptuous silks.

A four poster bedroom sits in the opposite wing of the villa, with indoor and outdoor showers (there’s also an additional ‘guest shower’ yep that’s three showers in all), a tub and his and hers vanity areas.

Outside there are two decked terraces with day beds, loungers, a dining pagoda and a huge infinity pool and Jacuzzi. Steps lead down to a private pristine white beach… It’s heavenly.

To Eat

Dining experiences are bespoke and can be taken anywhere at anytime on the island.

Options include: a treehouse lunch amongst ancient banyan trees, a kitchen garden experience (you pick you own ingredients from the garden and the chef will come and cook them for you), private beach BBQ’s, Creole dining at The Plantation House, in-villa or exclusive use of one of the private sea view bars or restaurants.

Don’t Miss

A guided nature walk at dawn, where you’ll spot beautiful rare magpie robins, giant tortoises, and if you’re lucky, hawksbill turtles on the beach.

Complimentary Yoga Session & Welcome Ritual

The Rock Spa is a shaded sanctuary, a peaceful teak house on a granite hilltop, with views across the rain forest canopy to the Indian Ocean.
