A luxury villa resort set in the lush Ayung River Valley, Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan is a spa paradise close to the artsy, energetic town of Ubud. Renowed for its spa and wellness offerings, the town’s name is derived from the Sanskrit word for ‘medicine’ (ubad), and was founded in the 8th century by a Javanese Hindu priest.

Arrival at the resort is like stepping into a different world, with rice bowl-shaped architecture characterising the 60 hillside suites and villas that bow to the river Ayung – Bali’s longest, widest and most revered river – below. The resort is accessed via a dramatic suspension bridge over the treetops, with the jungled walls tumbling away beneath.

A floating elliptical 852 sqm lotus pond sits at the top of the resort’s main building and mirrors the sky above the forest. Plus, there’s a stunning two-tier swimming pool cantilevered over the river. The resort even has on-site rice fields, which belong to a local farmer and harvest four tonnes of rice per year.

The Sacred River Spa

The Sacred River Spa was reimagined in 2024. As the name suggests it’s a pure, sacred space, where you’ll be guided to explore the intertwined Balinese philosophies of Sekala (the seen/physical world) and Niskala (the unseen/energetic world). Treatments flow from Sekala to Niskala (seen to unseen) to target physical issues and help you explore your inner self. Every treatment illustrates the all-encompassing Balinese belief of wellness being connected across body and soul, the outer and inner, the physical and spiritual worlds.

Stretching lazily around a set of lily ponds, with huge treatment pavilions, outdoor stone baths, saunas and steam rooms, plus numerous relaxation areas, The Sacred River Spa blends Ubud’s healing energy with nurturing treatments, soulful healing rituals and river stone massages. Each is crafted to unite every guest with the rhythms of nature and help restore primal balance, with transformative water-centric treatments central to the menu.

The signature Muladhara Chakra Ceremony is a unique massage incorporating energy healing modalities to balance your root chakra. Ibu Fera is the resort’s resident wellness mentor. A former Buddhist nun, she shares her wisdom through the other-worldly Sacred Nap and meditation programme. Lilik, the resident yogi master, leads innovative classes including AntiGravity, full moon and laughter yoga. There’s nothing forced or superficial about The Sacred River Spa – wellness here is unashamedly spiritual and all the better for it.
