Just an hour’s drive from London, in the small village of Dogmersfield, you’ll find the Four Seasons Hampshire, a beautiful Georgian manor house set within a stunningly picturesque 500-acre country estate.

As soon as you pull into the large driveway your car keys and bags are whisked away from you by the warm and efficient staff, and you know you’ve arrived at somewhere rather special. And more than that: you’ll realise you’re in a home from home the second you walk into the beautiful mahogany-panelled reception area, with its crackling log fires, oil paintings and snoozing hotel dog, black lab Oscar.

If you’re feeling energetic, you can try your hand at clay pigeon-shooting, canoeing, fishing, cycling, horse riding and tennis – and note that, if you don’t have a tennis partner, a member of staff will play with you. But your energy may desert you when you discover the spa…

The Spa

Set in the old stable block, you’ll find an oasis of calm and luxury, with treatment rooms, relaxation rooms, an indoor and outdoor pool and steam rooms where the Ayurvedic treatments are the ultimate pampering experience.

A glass-encased walkway connects the spa to the main hotel, and the botanical drawings on the walls and smart Japanese trees in boxes set the tone for a light, bright and very serene space. As well as the ESPA classics, there are some other interesting products on offer – Sodashi is a brand of Australian, chemical-free products focusing on wellbeing, while Swiss Perfection is a skincare range on a par with La Prairie: choose one of these for a seriously results-driven facial.

The usual crowd are mothers and daughters on spa days, but romantics can book the couples therapy suite for massages and an amorous Jacuzzi – rose petals, champagne and chocolate-dipped strawberries are available on request.

The Treatment

The Energy Amplifier is a 90-minute treatment designed to revitalise and energise those exhausted by the demands of everyday life. My treatment began with a consultation with the therapist who asked me to choose a colour for the lights in the room (red is the most energising, apparently) and a scented oil.

I was then rubbed down with the oil and Sodashi exfoliating salts (which you then shower off) and massaged with smooth crystals – these are used in the same way as traditional hot stones but some are cold and very soothing. Placed on the body’s chakras to intensify their effect I was left feeling pepped up and ready to face the world.

To get maximum results, combine your treatment with the Digital Spa Detox programme, where you surrender your mobile phone for a day of deep recharging.

Other Treatments

Absolute Body Envelopment body wrap is a tailor-made experience designed to help eliminate toxins and increase the effects and absorption of the products. Following skin brushing and exfoliation a complete bespoke body wrap, combined with essential oils, is applied to meet your specific needs. The treatment ends with a mind calming Oriental head massage during the envelopment for ultimate relaxation.

To Stay

Ask for a room in the manor house rather than the new wing: it’s worth it for the chance to walk up the magnificent Georgian staircase that leads up to the ‘Heritage’ rooms.

Each one is unique, large and has all mod cons, including a roll-top bath, glossy magazines and smart Asprey toiletries.

To Eat

The hotel has two restaurants, both serving produce sourced locally, either from the grounds or a nearby farm. Seasons – a restaurant and Salon Privé (the adjacent semi-private dining room for up to 24) offer a rustic British bistro menu featuring home-style and Chef’s signature dishes.

Café Santé serves fresh, healthy salads and hot dishes made to order in a glasshouse setting overlooking the spa and hotel grounds.Stop off afterwards at Bar 1086 – the warm and cosy atmosphere is perfect for an after-dinner drink. The Millionaire’s Martini, a tangy hit of lemon, sugar and vodka, is every bit as decadent as it sounds.
