An urban sanctuary where you least expect it, nestled in the Xuhui District’s last remaining cluster of shikumen townhouses. With only a few of the original shikumen lanes remaining, Capella Shanghai is proud to protect and evolve the city’s cultural legacy.
The design concept, created by Jaya Design International, embodies the spirit of Jian Ye Li – reflected in the fusion of French and Chinese elements, a nod to its heritage and the golden era during the 1930s. Through offering a spatial identity, Capella allows guests to relive an era of old Shanghai by providing a feeling of dwelling and mystique as they are left to discover all the gems tucked away in this abundant neighbourhood.
The nearby China Painting Institute, Shanghai Peking Opera House, distinctive carved matou gable walls, and embellished stone arches all encompass guests in the richness of symbols of historic significance and cultural living, beckoning to be explored.
Named after the constellation in which the Capella star sits, the award-winning Auriga Spa at Jian Ye Li is a world-class health and wellness centre offering high-end treatments rooted in locally-inspired holistic healing methods.
Auriga achieves optimal well-being for the body, mind and spirit with the time-tested ancient practices of Traditional Chinese Wellness (TCW) married with the latest innovations in spa technologies. Nestled in the heart of the cultural preservation zone, Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li combines a timeless Shanghainese courtyard living with Parisian flair through inspired architecture that respects the cultural and traditional architectural heritage of its roots.

Le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire is a true endeavour towards the neo-bistro conversational style of Parisienne dining. At the helm is Romain Chapel – Pierre Gagnaire’s protégé – overseeing a menu that focuses on quality, local ingredients and the reinterpretation of traditional French cooking. Le Comptoir’s interiors are based on a Parisian salon and inspired by the old-world glamour of Shanghai during the 1930s.
Other eateries include Le Bar – an intimate bar lounge, La Boulangerie – an informal and relaxed bakery serving homemade pastries and confectionary and The Lab – an interactive showcase where the chef and guests enjoy a lively exchange of culinary display.
