The Riviera Maya not only boasts some of the best beaches in the world, it’s also fringed with mangrove jungles, Mayan temples and some of the most exclusive resorts in the Caribbean. If you’re a water sports or diving fan, the coastline houses The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest coral reef in the world, where swimming with the magnificent whale sharks is a MUST.

Popular with Hollywood’s A-list and global high flyers, Banyan Tree Mayakoba is one of the most prestigious retreats in the area. Uber-luxe private pool villas, high-end eateries and cool cocktail bars scatter the resort’s jungles and lagoons.

Sun seeking guests are transported on traditional Mayan boats down the winding canals through the lush mangroves to the resort’s pristine white sand beach…

Banyan Tree Spa

When Banyan Tree Spa opened in Phuket, Thailand in 1994, it pioneered the tropical garden spa concept with its Asian therapies and holistic focus on spiritual, mental and physical harmony. As one of the pioneer oriental spas in Asia, it reintroduced an exotic blend of ancient health and beauty practices which have been passed down from generation to generation.

Like the tropical and sacred tree from which it got its name, the Banyan Tree Spa offers guests a Sanctuary for the Senses – a place for physical, mental and spiritual renewal. To achieve this, the spa focuses on a non-clinical and holistic approach based on traditional Asian healing therapies. It emphasizes on a ‘high-touch, low-tech’ approach that celebrates the human touch and the use of natural herbs and spices.

Banyan Tree resorts are renowned for their world class spas and Mayakoba, winner of numerous prestigious spa awards, doesn’t disappoint. Their spa boasts an extensive hydro and thermal circuit, ice showers, aroma steam rooms and a wonderful colour-therapy multi-jet thalassotherapy pool.

Treatment suites sit on stilts above the tranquil lagoon and offer a range of therapies using Banyan Tree’s own organic product brand. Unique to Mayokoba – honey oil is gathered from Melipona Honey Bees (an ancient Mayan remedy for detoxifying and healing the skin) and used in the products.

The Treatment

The spa’s signature treatment, Rainforest Indulgence, is a two hour holistic journey of a private hydrotherapy and thermal circuit followed by a chakra (energy) balancing massage. A bespoke mix of aromatherapy oils are used to relax the muscles with sweeping and stretching movements are used to open energy channels.

The treatment concludes with a pressure point head massage to rid tension. Banyan Tree are known for hiring some of the best therapists in the world – needless to say this was one of the most impressive treatments I’ve experienced. Pure and utter BLISS.

To Stay

118 private pool villas span the resort, ranging from studio suites to three bedrooms family retreats.

Our stunning Bliss Pool Villa had contemporary and airy living space with a Mayan / Asian inspired decor. The bathroom, complete with a very generous supply of Banyan Tree products, boasted an outdoor bathtub and monsoon shower.

Outside there was a private pool and lounging and dining area – a double hammock for perusing the lagoon view completed our idyllic haven.

To Eat

14 restaurants and bars scatter the resort ranging from fine dining and à la carte to pool and beachside snacks.

Banyan Tree’s signature restaurant, Saffron, serves contemporary Thai cuisine prepared by Thai chefs, brought to Mayakoba to share their authentic delights.

Try the incredible lobster curry, or my favourite – traditional pad Thai with prawns.

Don’t Miss
