Review – We check into The Langley Spa, Buckinghamshire
Set within 150 acres of Capability Brown-designed parkland, The Langley, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Buckinghamshire, is an 18th-century Palladian mansion quietly reimagined as one of the UK’s most refined spa destinations.
Once the country estate of the third Duke of Marlborough, the property underwent a six-year, multi-million-pound restoration, completed in June 2019. The result is an elegant country house hotel where heritage and contemporary wellness coexist seamlessly, with the spa at the heart of the experience.
Located beneath the mansion, The Langley Spa spans approximately 1,600 m². Yet despite its scale, the space feels intimate, with its marble finishes, muted tones, and a carefully considered sequence of experiences. This is a spa that encourages you to take your time, rather than rush through it all. These are spaces designed for quiet reflection.
A large indoor lap pool forms the focal point, complemented by vitality and plunge pools, a Himalayan salt sauna, and steam rooms – including a ladies-only rose-infused steam room – alongside contrast and experience showers and an ice fountain. For greater privacy, the spa offers a VIP Suite with its own sauna, steam room, and vitality pool – while separate men’s and women’s lounges provide more discreet relaxation.
The Spa
The Langley is the UK’s only full-service Sisley Paris spa, with an understated, but assuredly expert approach. Treatments blend botanical science with precise, results-driven techniques, from facials and eye treatments to scalp and hair care, body scrubs, and wraps – each tailored to individual guests.
Men’s grooming comes courtesy of Gentlemen’s Tonic, while Margaret Dabbs London delivers the manicures and pedicures. Massages range from full-body relaxation to targeted therapeutic work, with in-suite and couples’ options, and five treatment rooms, including couples’ suites.
Complementing the spa’s restorative offerings, the focus here is very much performance-led and evidence-based: the gym, developed with Matt Roberts, features Technogym and Prama interactive systems; while fitness consultations, tailored programmes, group classes, and personal training all aim to support guests who need to maintain or reset their routines.
To Stay
Choose from 41 elegant rooms blending period features such as fireplaces, ornate doorways and roll-top baths with contemporary furnishings and luxury amenities. The more expansive suites overlook the parkland and lake. There are junior suites too – and families can book connecting rooms. Dogs are also welcome in the more playful Grade II-listed Brew House, situated across the grounds from the main house.
To Eat
Within the spa itself, the Spa Lounge offers light bowls, fresh juices, guilt-free desserts; while the Langley’s main restaurant Cedar serves European cuisine with Italian, French, and Spanish influences, sourcing local ingredients. Elsewhere, afternoon tea can be had in the Drawing Room amid historic décor and garden views, while the Churchill Bar offers cocktails, fine spirits, and light bites.
Who Is It For?
With its polished, grown-up spa experience, The Langley Spa will suit guests who value space, quiet, and expertise over spectacle. It should also appeal to heritage enthusiasts, couples, solo visitors – and dog owners.
