Review – We Check in to Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, London
There are luxury hotels, and then there are places that immediately make you want to move in permanently. Mandarin Oriental Mayfair falls firmly into the latter category – if only I could afford one of its plush private residences…
Overview
Tucked discreetly into one of London’s most prestigious neighbourhoods, this intimate property feels less like a traditional hotel and more like an exceptionally stylish boutique residence. There’s a distinctly East-meets-West modern aesthetic – more downtown New York than traditional Mayfair – with rotating art displays, airy open spaces and a sense of quiet confidence that embodies modern luxury.
From the moment I step through the doors, the experience is seamless. My luggage is whisked away almost instantly and check-in feels effortless, setting the tone for a stay defined by understated service and impeccable attention to detail.
The Spa
Designed as a place of urban escapism and digital detox, The Spa at Mandarin Oriental Mayfair is a sanctuary hidden beneath the city streets that offers an immediate sense of calm from the moment you enter. Alongside the vitality pools, sauna, steam room and experience showers sits the centrepiece: a stunning 25-metre pool, softly starlit to create an almost celestial atmosphere.
A relaxation area, complete with mindfulness colouring books, leads through to beautifully appointed treatment rooms. Treatments come from the high-end brands Swiss Perfection and Seed to Skin, a fast-growing label that utilises organic and wild ingredients sustainably sourced from the farm at Borgo Santo Pietro, Tuscany. The spa menu is cleverly curated and covers everything from results-driven facials to tailored massages and holistic rituals.
Touchless technology continues to evolve in the world of luxury wellness, and the MOMAY spa offering comes in the form of Binaural Vibroacoustic sessions. Developed by premium wellness equipment brand Gharieni, the computer-controlled acoustic and vibrational therapy is designed to encourage deep relaxation and a meditative state. Options include Stress Relief, Power Nap, Mindfulness and Awaken.
The spa also offers a range of wellness rituals, including floating sound bath sessions, the Sleep Optimisation Ritual and the Nervous System Reset. For fitness enthusiasts, there’s a state-of-the-art gym, Reformer and mat Pilates classes, and a private personal training studio.
The Treatments
The Seed to Skin Natural Time For You treatment is entirely bespoke, incorporating facial, body or combined therapies designed to target everything from hydration and brightening to toning and balancing. Body-focused options include invigorating salt scrubs, detoxifying wraps and signature massages.
My treatment centres around a bespoke targeted massage. My intuitive therapist, Marie, instinctively identifies the problematic areas around my scapula and lower back. Warm oil from the Seed to Skin massage candle – scented with vanilla, rose and oud wood – is used to knead away knots and stretch tired muscles, alongside pressure-point work intended to clear the chakras. The treatment also includes some reflexology and a deeply relaxing head massage.
As someone who constantly struggles with the concept of “emptying my mind”, I am excited to try a Binaural Vibroacoustic session, albeit with equal parts curiosity and scepticism. I opt for the Stress Relief programme, specifically designed to achieve a deeply relaxed yet fully present state of mind.
The treatment takes place on a water-cushion bed in a softly lit room. Wearing headphones, I listen to layered soundscapes featuring waves and gentle tonal frequencies while subtle vibrations travel through the water bed in synchronisation with the audio. Within minutes, the outside world seems to disappear. The combination of sound, vibration and warm lighting creates an immersive, cocoon-like effect that feels remarkably restorative. It is similar to meditation, yet requires little effort or concentration. Instead, I simply lie back and allow the technology to do the work.
Twenty minutes later, I emerge feeling calmer, clearer and unexpectedly refreshed. For anyone who struggles to switch off or meditate traditionally, this treatment is well worth experiencing.
To Stay
With 50 rooms and suites, alongside a collection of private residences, Mandarin Oriental Mayfair has achieved a balance between intimate and impressive. It feels boutique in scale, yet delivers all the polish you’d expect from one of the world’s most respected luxury hotel brands.
My Studio Suite immediately feels like somewhere I could happily live permanently. The separate lounge area creates a genuine sense of space, while the bedroom is a masterclass in understated elegance. Floor-to-ceiling windows that actually open – it shouldn’t feel revolutionary in a city hotel, but somehow it does – flood the room with natural light. Thoughtful details, such as plug sockets cleverly integrated into the bedside tables and lighting and curtains controlled at the touch of a button, ensure a quick and stress-free settling in.
Wellness has also been woven into the in-room experience. Alongside the expected luxuries – such as the gorgeous Natura Bissé products in the bathroom – I discover a yoga mat and a library of on-demand wellness content covering everything from yoga and fitness to mindfulness, sleep support and wake-up routines.
To Eat
Hanover Bar, perched on the tenth floor, deserves a visit in its own right. Its heated terrace offers spectacular views across London’s skyline and provides the perfect setting for casual catch-ups and cocktails. Inspired by Hanover Square, the drinks menu features both alcoholic and non-alcoholic creations. Food is designed for sharing and grazing, with lobster tacos, mushroom ceviche and pizzettes among the highlights. Arrive before sunset if you can; watching the city lights slowly begin to twinkle below is all part of the experience.
Atrium Restaurant – a skylit dining space serving contemporary European cuisine – is the hotel’s main dining destination, offering breakfast and lunch. Alternatively, you can opt for the extensive in-room dining menu.
Who is it for?
This isn’t the sort of hotel that announces itself loudly. Instead, it quietly impresses from the outset. For those seeking a wellness-focused city escape where quiet luxury takes centre stage, Mandarin Oriental Mayfair is one of London’s most exciting new addresses.
